Malaikottai Valiban was one of the most pre-release hyped films in Malayalam this year. The reason for this hype was that it was Mohanlal's first film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery.
But the film did not live up to the expectations of the fans. The film received mixed response and failed to do well at the box office.
Although the film was well received by the film critics, the general audience did not take to the film.

Valiban was the best opening film of the year in Kerala. It was above 5 crores. But the negative feedback on the first day itself has affected the theater collection.
According to trackers, the film's closing box office in Kerala is 14.42 crores. 2.30 crore from other states and 13.13 crore from foreign markets. Thus the total earned is only 29.85 crores.
Mohanlal in the title role was written by PS Rafeeq. Mohanlal played the title character in the film and Harish Peradi, Danish Seth, Sonali Kulkarni, Manoj Moses, Katha Nandi, Manikanthan and others played the lead roles in the film. Cinematography is by Madhu Neelakant. Music by Prashant Pillai.
