NET 2018: UGC eases norms for PhD candidates

With National Eligibility Test (NET) 2018 notification on the anvil, University Grants Commission (UGC) has drafted a new proposal. The proposal meant for PhD candidates, would exempt them from qualifying NET for applying to Assistant Professor Jobs. However, UGC has put forward some regulations for those who attain PhD. According to the criteria set by the Commission, only the PhD degrees earned from institutes/universities within the top 500 World University ranking, would be counted for the purpose.

The proposal of not making NET mandatory for PhD candidates in order to apply for Assistant Professors is seen as a major change by the experts in the education field. However, with UGC putting forward the rank criteria of the University, it has to be seen how this draft is going to affect the Assistant Professor Recruitment procedure in the country.
