Vizhinjam protest turns violent; Police book 3000 people

The anti-protest in Vizhinjam witnessed violence on Sunday night after the protesters surrounded the police station demanding the release of those who were taken into custody in connection with the clash on Saturday.

Around 2,000 fishermen marched to the police station on Sunday night and vandalised the front office. As many as 36 policemen suffered severe injuries and 8 among them are reportedly in serious condition.

Meanwhile, Selton, who was arrested in connection with the protests, was remanded in judicial custody.

Police registered a case against 3000 people for attacking Vizhinjam police station here on Monday. The FIR registered revealed damages worth Rs 85 lakh.

Police slapped charges, including unlawful assembly, rioting and damaging public property.
According to the FIR, the attack on the police station was part of a conspiracy and the accused planned to kill the cops. The agitators barged into the police station on Sunday demanding release of five people booked for blocking vehicles to the port site on Friday. In order to control the angry mob, police released four of the accused.

An all-party meeting chaired by the district collector will be held on Monday at noon to discuss the issue.

A mob of agitators led by the Latin Catholic church revolted against the construction of Adani port in Vizhinjam on Sunday causing damage to public property. It is estimated that Adani group has suffered a loss of Rs 200 crore due to protests.
