Demolition of buildings cracked due to landslides in Joshimath; 4000 people were evacuated from the area

Buildings that have cracked due to landslides in Uttarakhand will be demolished from today. As part of this, around four thousand people in Joshimath were relocated. The action is for the safety of the buildings near the cracked ones. About 600 buildings were damaged.

The life of people in Joshimath has become difficult due to land subsidence. The area has been classified into three zones namely Danger, Buffer and Absolute Safe. This classification is based on expert inspection at the disaster site. More damaged buildings will be demolished. Construction work will not be allowed in Joshimath and its surrounding areas as it has been declared a disaster prone area.

About 30 percent of people in Joshimath have been affected by the disaster. About 4,000 people have been shifted to safer places, the Home Ministry said. The demolition process is being supervised by the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
