Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma has said that the ban on Trawling in the state would be implemented for 52 days from midnight of June 9th to July 31st. The decision was taken during the meeting, which was participated by the district collectors, concerned department heads and fishermen’s trade union leaders through video conferencing. However, Boat owners boycotted the meeting. Minister also informed that the district level meetings, prior to the ban on Trawling, would be conducted on 30th, this month.

The 24-hour control rooms for monsoon sea rescue and patrolling have been launched, coordinated by the fisheries stations. To curb the spread of the coronavirus, the number of workers who go for fishing in ring seine boats has been reduced to 30. It has been suggested that fishermen should engage in fishing only in accordance with social norms and in accordance with the covid standards. The ban on Trawling imposed by the central government on special economic zones in the deep sea is 61 days, from June 1 to July 31.
