‘Yaas’ hurricane tomorrow; heavy rain till Wednesday

The meteorological office said that the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal will turn into Hurricane Yaas tomorrow. Although Kerala is not on the low pressure path, heavy rains will continue till Wednesday. Yellow alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki districts today due to heavy rains.

There is a possibility of heavy rain in all the 7 districts from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Bengal and the northern coast of Odisha on Wednesday evening. Oman named the hurricane ‘Yaas’. In Persian it means jasmine.

There is no impediment to fishing off the coast of Kerala. But fishing will not be allowed in the south-eastern Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands until tomorrow. Fishermen in these areas were also advised to return. Southwest monsoon arrives in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to meteorologists, the arrival of ‘Yaas’ will bring early monsoon in Kerala. The first forecast was that it would arrive on the 31st.
