Rising in the media.

Everyone has the right to work with dignity. Tummarukudi said that it is not a gift. Full version of the post-

Appi and the fly

The language of the ancient villages had none of the “sophistication” we see today.

For example, it was common in my younger days to hear people say that they are like “mouse and fly” to show the depth of interaction between two people. It will be said in any audience, and there is no difficulty in it for both the speaker and the listener.

At that time there was no toilet in Tummarukudi and people used to defecate in the field. Therefore, in many places in the field, it is always seen that the fly is covered with the apple. Then if the elders give an example of “Api and fly” the meaning will be grasped quickly.

Now that things are in the toilet, the new kids don’t have to see much of this sight, so the practice is out of place.

But maybe it’s because I have old country memories in my mind, when I see visual journalists standing around celebrities, I remember this expression “Api Umi Echa”.

Most of the visual media workers in Kerala are young people. So I have a special interest in them. It is an unattractive profession with no future at all. Those who come to me for career counseling, those who take any aptitude test and think that the media field is the right career for them, I always divert them whenever possible.

However, I have love and respect for those who came into this field. Most of them follow the path led by Lees Ducett and Anita Pratap. They don’t have much to do when they are spearheading a very small pond called Kerala. In Kerala, where the middle class generally leads a comfortable life, some politics, some movies, some sports, the people have no great interests beyond this. The main job is to spearhead the leaders in these political and film arenas.

In fact, when it comes to dealing with important issues, it has no TRP. Without TRP there is no advertisement and without advertisement there is no salary. Then you can leave the ideal and wrap the app.

This is why those in power can treat media representatives with arrogance. If those at the top are hated, if they boycott a medium, they will be attacked as wasps by their supporters, who are not guaranteed to be supported by their own establishment. That is enough to end the career of a young journalist or activist.

Journalists are not really that powerless. In fact many of the celebrities we see around us are their creation. The lifeblood of celebrities is the visibility they get in the media. Like computer programming or share trading, their careers and incomes are not self-sustaining even if they are not pampered by others. Let’s see the status of fly-free Appi. Don’t remind me, Ponno!

Then journalists should realize their potential. This requires a little more team spirit. A precise protocol is required. If one misbehaves with a journalist or activist, one should predetermine how others should behave.

If one person is asked to leave the press conference, others should decide to leave with them. This should be part of the training and code of contact. This should be applied once or twice. After seeing the effect, then their workplace will be more equal.

Everyone has the right to work with dignity. It is not a gift.
