There is a theory of conflict escalation in literary narrative. That is, some characters fight each other, or some story contexts. The first thing they rub against each other is for a very small thing. But conflict escalation is a narrative method in which small problems gradually lead to another big problem, and that problem causes another bigger problem, and so on and so forth.
This theory also bears a strong resemblance to the butterfly effect. Driving License, Ayyappan and Koshy were the two films I saw recently that made the best use of it in Malayalam cinema.
The conflict between Harindran and Kuruvila in the movie Driving License is increasing with every passing moment of the movie. Nowhere does it diminish. But that is not the case in Ayyappan and Koshy. As he learns more about the character of Ayyappan, Koshy returns to his home, defeating himself. But Koshy’s father, Kurian, reunites Koshy. Kurian hurts Koshy’s ego in a big way.
The way he finds out is to question Koshy’s courage in front of his wife and the driver of the house. Kurien presents to them all the past history of Kosi, who went to the army in the past and came back “scared”. Koshy seeks out Ayyappan again to protect his self-esteem in the face of all this.
In a later scene, Koshy himself reveals what the character of Kurian actually means by “candy”. Kurian’s problem is that he doesn’t have a ground to play on. When you look at a hand in politics in the past, you can see that it ran for a while but then fell.
Attempts were made to intervene in many of the problems of the natives, but the aristocracy inherited was not as valuable to the natives as it had been in the past. It was a ground that had finally fallen to Kurian, who carried the old glory in his blood, his own son Koshy. He must have spent all his egoistic commanding behavior on his own son, daughter-in-law, the driver of the house, and perhaps his wife lying in bed.
S. is one of the most famous directors in Tamil. A. Chandrasekhar. But he is only known as the father of superstar Vijay. Although he is one of the best known directors in Tamil, he is also a man who has not been able to make his mark as a director. He has directed over 70 films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
He was also closely associated with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). “Karunanidhi and I have shared 35 years of brotherhood,” Chandrasekhar himself told the media. Karunanidhi also wrote the screenplay for Neethikku Thandanai, directed by Chandrasekhar for the first time.
Chandrasekhar once said that although he was not in the party, he often talked politics with Karunanidhi. Vijay won the Tamil Nadu State Government Award for Best Actor for his performance in Kaathaluk Maryadai, which competed with Mohanlal and Prakash Raj in Iruvar.
Today, Vijay is popularly known as Dalapati. Until the release of the first look poster for the movie Mersal, Vijay was a ‘junior commander’. If Vijay is the ‘junior’ commander, then who is this ‘senior’ commander?
Naturally, it’s our Rajinikanth, isn’t it ?! Rajinikanth acted in the movie Dalapati. Rajinikanth was nicknamed the Commander-in-Chief of Tamil Nadu – this is the perception of many. But it was wrong. Dalpati was the name given to Stalin, the son of Karunanidhi and the DMK party president. I.e. father king, Mon commander (commander in chief).
By giving the son the title of junior commander, it is clear that the father meant the future son’s political entry. In order to get his son into politics, he must first be made popular. Perhaps Vijay’s first films were his father’s efforts for that.
His father Chandrasekhar wrote, directed and produced all the early films starring Vijay. “Would anyone take a ticket to see this face?” If an actor who had to accept the pathetic criticism of the first film still gets a dozen films, it is because of his father Chandrasekhar.
This is not to say that Vijay is just a puppet in his own hands. Until the release of Sura in 2010, it was heard that Chandrasekhar had chosen all of Vijay’s films. It was only after a series of setbacks that Vijay himself intervened and told his father, “Mind your business.”
In a recent interview, Shankar had said that Vijay was supposed to do Muthalvan but Vijay was not able to be a part of the film because of the discussions between his assistant and Vijay’s father. Perhaps if Muthalvan had been successful at the age of 25, his career would have gone the other way.
He has directed over seventy films in three languages but has not been able to earn a place of his own in cinema. Brotherly closeness with Karunanidhi, one of the great trees of Tamil Nadu politics for three and a half decades. Yet he did not hold the clutch in politics.
The last ground he fell on was his own son Vijay’s star. He still believes that what he has not been able to achieve can be achieved with his son. An example of this is a statement he made the other day – “Vijay will come into politics. In time, the Vijay Makkal movement will become a political party. ” This means that he is still tapping the wet ground in Tamil Nadu politics.
Vijay Fans Club is popularly known in Tamil Nadu as Vijay Makkal Iyakkam. They do a lot of charitable work and community service. Many things are directly funded by Vijay himself. Chandrasekhar himself directly issues all the official statements of the Vijay Makkal Movement. In other words, the Vijay Makkal movement today is a para-political party run by Chandrasekhar.
This is a question that remains. In the movie Ayyappan and Koshy, a clash takes place between Koshy and Kurien and Koshy tells Kurien that his father should not come to control his life anymore. Will such a clash ever take place between Vijay and Chandrasekhar?
Absolutely not. Because the character of Koshy, like his father Kurian, is a character who never got a ground to play anywhere. Despite playing many games, Koshy was one of the losers there. Kurian. The only mission that Koshy has successfully accomplished is to be able to satisfy his father’s ego, albeit for a while.
But this problem never arises in the Vijay-Chandrasekhar relationship. Vijay’s father has grown ten times as much as his father wanted him to be. When his son was launched in cinema, Chandrasekhar never thought that his son would become the biggest superstar in Tamil cinema in a quarter of a century.
Beyond what Chandrasekhar dreamed of, Vijay has already delivered on the ground of cinema (even if the ground on which his father dreamed was politics). Vijay has answered the question of who is the next Rajini in Tamil cinema by his own name. In Tamil politics, it remains to be seen whether Vijay will be the next MGR or Vijayakanth soon.
