Veteran director Thampi Kannanthanam passed away

Veteran director Thampi Kannanthanam, who had churned out super – mega hits for Malayalam film industry, passed away. Aged 65, his death was confirmed by a private hospital in Kochi, where he was admitted to. A name to reckon during the 80’s and 90’s of Malayalam cinema, Thampi Kannanthanam was incidental in giving the superstar image to Mohanlal with the iconic 1986 movie ‘Rajavinte Makan’. Started off his career in the year 1983, Thampi Kannanthanam has gone onto create a number of superhits in Malayalam cinema, and has directed all the major stars during the time.

Born in the year 1953, Thampi Kannanthanam has always been a director, who stressed on the need for taking films in a large canvas, which are technically superior.  Directing 16 movies till date, it was the 2004 movie ‘Freedom’, which was his last directorial venture. Mohanlal is the lead actor, with which Thampi Kannanthanam has worked with the most. Interestingly, Mohanlal’s son Pranav Mohanlal made his debut with yet another Thampi Kannanthanam movie ‘Onnaman’, released in the year 2002.
