The Calcutta High Court was informed on Thursday, February 8 that female prisoners in custody are becoming pregnant in jail. The court was also informed that at least 196 babies have been born so far. A bench comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya stated that the matter is serious.
He submitted two notes before a division bench of the Calcutta High Court comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya. Then babies are born in prisons. At present, 196 children are lodged in various jails in West Bengal,” said the amicus curiae.
