Telangana Chief Minister Abstains From Republic Day Celebrations Ignoring High Court Order

Telangana without Republic Day celebrations as per protocol following Governor-Chief Minister tussle. Due to problems with the Governor, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao stayed away from the function. The Chief Minister has violated the High Court order to hold the Republic Day celebration at the parade ground following the central instructions. The High Court’s order was against the move to cancel the ceremony citing the Covid norms.

The governor had written to the chief minister and other ministers to be a part of the ceremony, but none responded. Then Governor Tamilisai Soundarrajan hoisted the flag at Raj Bhavan.

Tamilisai Soundararajan will take charge as the Governor of Telangana in 2019. During this period, the governor’s relationship with the state government was bad. Last year too, citing the Covid protocol, the government had abandoned the ceremony at the parade ground. This time the convention of sending the governor to read a speech on the occasion was also violated. There are indications that the governor is upset with such developments.

A few days ago, the Governor had severely criticized the Chief Minister’s stance. “State budget is coming, Republic Day celebration is coming, let’s see how a governor will be honoured,” she said. Tamizhisai said that if he wants to decide on the bills that have come to him, he should first explain why the Chief Minister is violating the protocol. She added that no one should teach her what to do.
