Tamil Nadu bans online gambling games; Violators face up to two years in prison

Online gambling has been banned in Tamil Nadu today. The TN government has issued a special ordinance for this. Those who gamble online will now be fined Rs 5,000 and jailed for six months to two years. Those who run online gambling centers face a fine of up to Rs 10,000 and imprisonment for up to two years.

Many people in Tamil Nadu have committed suicide after losing money by participating in online gambling. It is against this backdrop that the Tamil Nadu government has taken action. There was also widespread demand for a ban on online gambling. Government sources said gambling was a major social disaster.

The Madras High Court had also asked the government to consider banning gambling. Subsequently, the government issued an ordinance amending the Gambling Act of 1930. The ordinance was signed by the Governor. Earlier, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana had banned online gambling.
