The Supreme Court has said that the chief secretaries of the states including Kerala will have to be summoned for not implementing the proposal to increase the pension of retired judicial officers. If the court order is not respected, there is no other option than contempt of court, Justice B.R. The bench chaired by Gavai clarified.
In 2012, the Supreme Court had ordered to increase the pension of judicial officers who retired after January 1, 1996. The court had also directed to increase the pension of the judicial officers whose pension was fixed on the Karnataka model. An increase of 3.07 times has been suggested. The court had also directed that at least fifty percent of the revised pay scale of the post held should be paid as pension.
In September last year, the Supreme Court had directed the state governments to implement this proposal within three months. However, the amicus curiae pointed out in the Supreme Court that some states including Kerala have still not implemented the directive. The Supreme Court then warned that the chief secretaries of the states including Kerala, which have not implemented the order, will have to be summoned.
