Indore is once again recognized as the cleanest city in the country. This is the fifth consecutive time that Indore has won the Central Government’s Swachh Survekshan Awards. Indore is the largest and most densely populated city in Madhya Pradesh. Chhattisgarh tops list of cleanest states in India

Among the cleanest cities, Surat (Gujarat) came second and Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) came third. Varanasi is the cleanest Ganga Town. Munger and Patna in Bihar are ranked second and third respectively. While Indore and Surat retained their former status, Vijayawada overtook Navi Mumbai, who were third last year, to fourth.
The awards are based on a survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Urban Development. President Ramnath Kovind presented the awards at a function attended by Minister of State for Home Hardeep Singh Puri on Saturday. The survey was conducted in 4,320 cities in 28 days. According to the ministry, more than 4.2 crore people took part in the survey.
Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, with more than 100 municipalities, were selected as the second and third cleanest states in the country. Among the states with less than 100 municipalities, Jharkhand, Haryana and Goa came first, second and third respectively. Indore, Surat, Vijayawada, Navi Mumbai, New Delhi, Ambikapur, Tirupati, Pune, Noida and Ujjain are among the top ten cleanest cities with a population of over one lakh. Lucknow ranks last among the top 25 cities in the same category.
Maharashtra ranks first among cities with a population of less than one lakh. Lonavala and Saswad won the next two places. The New Delhi Municipal Council topped the list of smaller cities with a population of 1-3 lakh. Hoshangabad won the award for the fastest growing small town. People considered Tripudi to be the best of the small towns.
Noida has been selected as the cleanest medium city with a population of 3-10 lakhs. Navi Mumbai won the first prize in the new category of Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge. Navi Mumbai is the cleanest city with a population of 10-40 lakhs. In the Cantonment Board’s list, Ahmedabad came first, Meerut second and Delhi third. Surat tops the district rankings. Indore and New Delhi finished second and third respectively.
