The Supreme Court has asked the state governments to consider bringing home liquor during the Lockdown period. The bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kaul and BR Gavai said that this could be considered in order to avoid congestion in front of liquor shops and to maintain social distance. The court was considering a public interest litigation in which the sale of liquor amid the lockdown would affect people’s lives.
No order will be issued regarding this. But the states should consider selling alcohol indirectly, the court said. Justice Kaul said there were discussions about home delivery. Food delivery company Zomato has announced it is considering bringing alcohol to homes. Currently, alcohol is not legally allowed in India. With the opening of liquor stores in many states, there is a huge congestion formed in front of the liquor shops..
