Air India fined for death of 80-year-old man who had to walk from the plane to the terminal due to no wheelchair facility.
Air India has been fined Rs 30 lakh. Air India was fined a huge amount by DGCA. The DGCA had earlier sought an explanation from Air India regarding the incident.
The DGCA imposed the penalty after hearing Air India's explanation. DGCA found that Air India made a mistake here.
On February 16, the 80-year-old had to walk to the terminal after wheelchair facilities were not available at the Mumbai airport.
The deceased was an American citizen of Indian origin who had come to Mumbai from New York. They had booked economy class on Air India AI 116 flight which reached Mumbai.
They had also booked wheelchair facility. Due to the lack of a wheelchair, only the wife got a wheelchair. The husband had to walk to the terminal.
By the time he reached the immigration area after walking 1.5 km, he collapsed due to a heart attack. He was first shifted to the medical wing of the Mumbai airport and then to the Nanavati hospital. But his life could not be saved.
