(Pantirangao Maoist Case) The Panthirangao Maoist case was discussed through the CPM’s change in the Prohibited Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). On November 1, 2019, CPM activists Alan Shuhaib and Taha Fazal were arrested by the police under UAPA charges for alleged Maoist links. There was a protest against the imposition of UAPA, which the CPM described as black law, but the police and the government were not ready to correct it. A section of the CPM district unit came out in favor of the students, but the Chief Minister himself denied it, and there was no other way. Both were expelled from the party. NIA took over the case as UAPA was imposed. The government sent a letter against this but to no avail. Allegations remained that the government itself paved the way for the NIA by imposing UAPA.
After 10 months in jail, the NIA court granted bail to Allan and Taha on September 9. The court granted bail denying all the allegations leveled against the two by the investigating agencies. The judgment stated that the prosecution has not been able to prove that the duo had any connection with the Maoist organization or any terrorist activities except that they might have been attracted to Maoist ideas.
