Hollywood is the biggest movie industry in this world. After this comes the Indian film industry. Till a time Indian cinema was only Hindi cinema. But not so today. South Indian movies are more popular than Hindi movies. However, Telugu and Kannada films have contributed more to this growth. Malayalam is still on the path of growth. Some of the Malayalam movies released in Kitchen have created a big wave in the neighboring states, but still Malayalam movies have not reached the stage of acceptance in the North Indian states. Meanwhile, an interesting figure is being noted.
The report was released by Ormax Media, a media firm. This is the annual report for the year 2023. This is an estimate of what percentage of people in India go to cinemas and watch movies. According to their estimates, the number of movie watchers in India is 15.7 crore. This is only the estimate for 2023. A growth of 29 percent has been recorded for the year 2022. There is an 8% growth over the pre-Covid situation.
However, 15 crores is only 11.1% of India's total population. Meanwhile, 94.2 crore movie tickets were sold in India last year. That means an average movie buff watches six movies a year. Hindi cinema recorded the highest growth in audience numbers. Compared to the year 2022, Bollywood has achieved a growth of 58 percent in the year 2023. At the same time, when it comes to South Indian cinema, Malayalam cinema is the only one that has recorded growth, which is a matter of pride for us.
If we look at 2022, there will be a 19 percent growth in the number of viewers in Malayalam in 2023. This is a huge growth. Meanwhile, the Tamil industry is down by 3%. Telugu cinema has gone down by 6%. Kannada cinema, which has seen a big boost with KGF cinema, has gone down by 9% compared to last year.
