Suspecting of community spread, a triple lockdown was announced in Ponnani taluk. Started today, the triple Lockdown will continue till July 6th. As per the latest move, regulations will be tightened in the area. Authorities said that the actions were taken on the wake of a growing number of Covid patients whose sources can’t be traced down. The health department has decided to conduct a mass testing of samples in Ponnani taluk. As per the estimates, about 20,000 people have had contact with Covid positive health workers in Edappal.
As a part of this, the district administration has recommended to the government that the entire panchayats and the Ponnani municipality in Ponnani taluk be made a containment zone. At present there are only 4 panchayats and 47 wards in the municipality. The random sampling test will begin tomorrow and 1500 people will be subjected to a Covid test, including those who are afflicted with the disease, health workers, vendors, police, carpenters and over 60 year olds.
Similarly, a full lockdown was initiated in Pallikkathodu panchayat in Kottayam. The scheduled lockdown period is for 2 days, as 6 members in a family, were tested positive for the dieses. The panchayat will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was on June 26th, that four relatives of a private hospital employee at Ponkunnam – who was tested positive – were diagnosed with the disease. Her husband (37), six- and three-year-old girls and mother-in-law (67) were infected with the virus. With this the number of infected people in their family has increased to 6.
