Chavakkad (Thrissur): The floating bridge inaugurated last month at Blangad beach has collapsed. The bridge collapsed due to strong waves. The incident happened around 2 pm yesterday.
Those on the bridge miraculously escaped. The part of the floating bridge that washed into the sea was later brought ashore. About 10 meters of the central part of the hundred meter long floating bridge was separated.
2 travelers and 6 crew members were on the bridge at that time. One traveler fell into the water but was rescued by the others.
There was no rush of visitors as it was not a holiday. By this a great danger was averted. At the same time, the part that had been shaken by the strong current was heavily worked and brought to the shore in pieces.
Minister PA Muhammad Riaz inaugurated the floating bridge on October 1. The floating bridge is being set up and operated by Beach Brothers Chavakkad (BBC), a private company, as part of a project by the Tourism Department’s Destination Management Council to promote coastal tourism.
The design is such that one hundred people can enter the bridge at the same time. It is a 100 meter walk across the bridge to the sea.
The entrance fee is Rs 120 per person on the bridge, which rises and falls according to the traffic. It is said that the construction cost is Rs 80 lakh.
