Singer Daler Mehndi’s appeal against a two-year jail term in a 2003 case of human trafficking was dismissed by a district court in Patiala today, and he was taken into custody.
About 19 years ago, Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh were accused of taking money to illegally send people mainly to the US and Canada via the “troupe” route. While they did “drop off” some people, there were others who alleged that they took money but did not take them along.
The brothers were charged under Indian Penal Code’s sections for human trafficking and conspiracy besides the Indian Passport Act. Both Daler Mehndi and Shamsher Singh got two-year jail terms in 2018. They were, however, released on bail and filed appeals.
During this time, 10 people were shown as group members to help them travel to other countries. As per the reports, 35 complaints came up against Daler Mehndi and his brother after a man named, Bakshish Singh, registered a case against the two brothers.
