The Telecom Commission of India has given nod for using Wi-Fi and calls in flight. By approving in-flight connectivity in terms of voice-data, the Ministry informed that most of the recommendations made by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) were accepted. However, some of the recommendations were not accepted, owing to the difficulties in implementing them on a practical note. One such is that of permitting foreign satellites and foreign gateways.
The Ministry, while dealing with the issue, said that only Indian satellites would be approved. Adding that a separate category of license (IN-Flight Connectivity) would be created, the license will also be applicable for ships as well. According to the reports, a token license fee of INR 1 would be charged from service providers. The process will be operational within the next 3 – 4 months of time.
