The case of gold smuggling through diplomatic baggage has invited nationwide attention. While the Customs Department is yet to find Swapna Suresh, who is said to be the mastermind behind the crime, it is believed that the state government is under tremendous pressure, considering the various political connotations that the case has achieved. Last day, the Central Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman and the Union Minister V Muraleedharan discussed the case and have analyzed the progress of the investigation so far.
With Customs department cannot investigate criminal cases, the central government is looking at the trajectory of the case. If criminal charges are introduced, then, CBI might be introduced into the scene. However, the presence of gold will also be linked to terrorist activities – and in such a case scenario, NIA too would be involved in this case. Going in line with the reports, it can be assumed that the Central government is looking forward to introduce a central investigation agency into this matter. Finance Minister has also asked the details of the case to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs department.
