While Customs Department has been handling the case of smuggling gold through Diplomatic baggage for the past some days, they are yet to find the prime accused, Swapna Suresh in the case. That said, the central government is pushing hard to find those who are behind the crime, and has reportedly given the charge to CBI. The decision was taken, especially since it plays with the diplomatic relationship between India and UAE.
Reports state that the Prime Minister’s office has handed over the order to the Union Home Ministry. Customs Department, though has managed to get some valuable evidences, however is not capable of proceeding with criminal cases. With the entry of the CBI and the added pressure from the central government, it is expected that the investigation would soon make some marked progresses. The investigation would also cover all the gold smuggling operations took place in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram for the past two years.
