Director Alleppey Ashraf shared a note on the 40th death anniversary of Jayan, the all time action hero of Malayalam film industry. The director says that the secret behind Jayan’s voice in the films is that he has kept the producer’s and director’s condition of ‘don’t speak out’ literally for decades.
Alleppey Ashraf’s Note:
November 16, 1980. The thunder of Malayalam cinema, Jayan and What Malayalam cinema has lost forever is the glowing face of strong masculinity. Perhaps if Jayan’s voice was known to be mine in the film, including ‘Kolilakkam’, it would have affected the box office collection a lot, and people would have seen the film with prejudice.
Jayan is good, the propaganda that the voice is different may have affected the box office success of the film. For decades, the best recognition I received was not telling that secret. I literally followed the producer and director’s rule of ‘don’t speak out’.
“Kolilakkam , ‘Aakramanam’ ‘Ariyappedatha Rahasyam’ , ‘Manushyamrugam’, I had to give life to that inextinguishable lamp through my voice. I still consider it a great fortune.”
